scaffolding (ii)
For next week's paper you are going to be doing a little comparison/contrast, and you are going to do so with the scariest (for some) of literary genres: poetry. Be sure to take advantage of the comparative nature of the topics. Most of the pairs have an easier and a harder poem, so if you can get a sense of what the point of the easier poem is, then use that information as you are analyzing the harder poem. Remember you just need to look at them closely.
And here is the good news (yes, there really is good news): once again we are scaffolding (compiling some notes and gathering some fresh ideas to build next week's paper on). The Comparison/Contrast paper you are working on uses the same poem pairs as this week's discussion :)
SPECIAL NOTE: Canvas is not broken (well, I hope it isn't). This week when you log into Canvas and look at the Discussion, you will not be able to read anyone else's posts/replies until after you Post your answer. I want you do work this out on your own, AND THEN add to your understanding once you see what everyone else has as well.
First, read the topics and instructions for the second essay here: Comparison/Contrast Paper.
Next, do your best to answer one of the questions. Be sure to look at both works in the numbered pair (so if you are discussing "Pilon," you are also discussing "Sleepover," for example.
Be sure to answer the question as best you can, but also be sure you are looking very closely, at small parts of the works (not big, hulking, massive chunks). Quote from the works to show examples that illustrate and support your claims, and do not forget the required parenthetical citations. Oh, and most of these are very subtle, suggestive, not obvious and cliche (but some are more than others). By the way, there is a "how to cite poetry" file you can refer to if you are quoting poetry this week.
For Replies actively discuss and help one another. NO "I THINK" kinds of statements, just detailed examples and explanations. You want to use this material to help you get started with the paper next week.
REMEMBER: your replies are not limited to the poems you discussed in your posts. Mix it up :)
SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT ME: Once again I will try to keep hands off as much as possible, but, well, by now you know that's not really me. But I WILL TRY :) .
