Answer any one of the questions below:

  1. At one point William urges Werther to profess his love for Lotte or to get out of the picture. Why doesn't Werther follow his advice? Does Werther genuinely love Lotte? You might want to look at scenes where Werther describes Lotte, describes being in love, comes in contact with Lotte, etc.

  2. How are we meant to feel about Lotte in all of this? Does she make the right choice by marrying Albert? If so, why doesn't she just tell Werther to leave?

  3. This is somewhat of a combination of questions 1 & 2 above. How are Werther and Albert foils (opposites, symbolizing different ideas and values and philosophies)? What does each have to offer Lotte, and how is she drawn to each? Why, in the end, does she stick with Albert? Does this fit her character as we see her in the first half of the book?
